This is Chris's story, but we meet some of the key players from other parts of the Rillton Cycle including Detective Chief Superintendent Dawn Bowman, vicar's son Aby Knapper, librarian and researcher Kate Paterson and Cappy Shirakawa, American-Japanese barman of the Moiled Bull Public House.

Although this story follows the events of The Courier's Chronicle it was written as an introduction to the Rillton Cycle and contains no serious spoilers to the earlier story.
